Understanding Prescription Drug Addiction

Prescription drug addiction continues to be a pressing concern affecting people from all walks of life. Medications prescribed for pain relief, sleep disorders, anxiety and other medical conditions can lead to abuse and dependency. Commonly abused prescription drugs include:
  • Opioids: These are for pain relief and include oxycodone, morphine and hydrocodone, as well as fentanyl. They’re very addictive and work by binding to the brain’s opioid receptors. In doing so, they can reduce the perception of pain but also create euphoria, contributing to abuse.
  • Benzodiazepines: Prescribed for anxiety and sleep disorders, this class of drugs includes Ativan, Valium and Xanax. They calm the central nervous system, but prolonged use can lead to addiction and dependence.
  • Stimulants: These are often prescribed for ADHD and include Adderall and Ritalin, both of which increase concentration and alertness. They can also be misused because of their effects.
  • Sedatives: Ambien and Lunesta are examples of prescription medicines used for treating sleep disorders, but when they’re used improperly, they can be addictive.
Possible red flags of prescription drug abuse include:
  • Higher tolerance and taking more to get the same effect.
  • Withdrawal when not using the drug.
  • Persistent drug use despite negative consequences.
  • Visiting multiple doctors to try and get prescriptions.
  • Behavior changes, including shifts in mood and energy levels.
The path to addiction to these drugs usually begins with legitimate medical use, but over time, this use can escalate to dependency and misuse. The earlier you can recognize the need for prescription drug rehab, the better for recovery outcomes. This can also lower other health risks like overdose, organ damage, impaired judgment and mental health issues. Stories of Hope

OUR PHP

Partial Hospitalization Program for Treating Prescription Drug Addiction

One level of care available at our Atlanta outpatient center is a partial hospitalization program. A PHP is an intensive care level with a structured environment that allows you to return home in the evenings.

A PHP provides the intensity of inpatient treatment and rigorous daily therapy interventions, but you can maintain a sense of independence. The schedule of a PHP is structured with multiple therapy sessions, educational workshops and activities throughout the day, so you stay focused on your recovery goals. It provides a supportive environment fostering growth and healing.

Our PHP clients receive access to medical and psychiatric care, and relapse prevention is a big focus. You’ll learn how to identify triggers, manage cravings and cope with stress. You’ll also interact with others on the path to recovery, and peer support can motivate and help you feel connected and understood. We also believe in integrating holistic approaches to address your needs as a complete person.

Regular attendance and participation in PHP sessions will provide you with accountability to stay committed to recovery goals, with ongoing monitoring and support necessary to identify and address potential setbacks early on.

If you’re seeking help for an addiction to prescription drugs, contact us for details about the benefits of our partial hospitalization program (PHP).

OUR IOP

Intensive Outpatient Programs for Prescription Drug Addiction

Another level of care we offer at our center is an intensive outpatient program that’s flexible but still structured. During an IOP, you’ll attend treatment sessions several times a week for a few hours daily. You can integrate recovery into your everyday life without full-time residential care. While it’s flexible, you’re still in a recovery-focused environment.

If you’d like to explore participation in an intensive outpatient program at The Berman Center, we’re available anytime.

OUR APPROACH

Evidence-Based Treatments for Prescription Drug Addiction

The specifics of your treatment plan at The Berman Center depend on your needs, but some of the evidence-based approaches that are proven to help with prescription drug addiction can include:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a widely used evidence-based approach that helps you understand the links between your thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Through CBT, you can identify your negative ways of thinking and behaving contributing to addiction. You can learn coping skills and craving management and address triggers that play a role in your substance use.
  • Another evidence-based treatment is dialectical behavior therapy. DBT combines CBT techniques with mindfulness. It also focuses on teaching skills in emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness and distress tolerance. Addiction treatment helps you learn to manage intense emotions and reduce self-destructive behaviors.
  • Medication-assisted treatment uses medications combined with behavioral therapies and counseling to manage withdrawal symptoms and ravings and prevent relapse. MAT is especially beneficial for treating opioid addiction.
  • Motivational interviewing is an approach to counseling that enhances your motivation to change by resolving ambivalence. You work with a therapist to explore your motivations for changes and set goals. You can then create a plan to achieve them.
  • Twelve-step facilitation Therapy is an evidence-based approach that uses the principles of the twelve steps to encourage meeting participation and engagement in these programs as part of your recovery.
  • We emphasize family therapy and involvement whenever possible at The Berman Center. Involving the family in your treatment can address the dynamics and communication patterns that can contribute to addiction. We can also provide support and education to family members to help them understand addiction and learn how to support their recovery.

These are just a few of the many approaches to treating prescription drug addiction that we may integrate into a treatment plan.
