What is OCD?
Obsessive compulsive disorder is a mental health disorder that has two defining features: experiencing uncontrollable thoughts that frequently recur (obsessions) and carrying out repetitive behaviors (compulsions). These symptoms can interfere with a person’s ability to engage in daily living activities and can often take up much of their time. The uncontrollable thoughts can often be distressing and create anxiety. When a person experiences an uncontrollable thought, they often engage in a compulsion in order to ease their anxiety.
People may experience different kinds of obsessions. Some of the most common types of obsessions are related to:
- Fear of losing or forgetting something
- Fear of contamination
- Fear of losing control over your own behavior
To mitigate the anxiety around these obsessions, an individual may carry out compulsions such as:
- Repeatedly checking, such as making sure the oven is turned off and the doors are locked
- Excessively washing hands or cleaning
- Ordering things in a precise way
People with OCD often experience problems in their lives related to these obsessions and compulsions. They can’t control these symptoms despite being aware that they are excessive, and they often spend more than one hour a day carrying out their compulsions.
While the causes of OCD aren’t completely clear, there are several risk factors that may increase your likelihood of developing this disorder. These include:
- Genetics: People with a parent or sibling who has OCD are more likely to develop it. Research into which genes or set of genes is related to OCD is ongoing.
- Brain differences: Research has found that people with OCD often exhibit differences in certain parts of their brain, such as the frontal cortex and subcortical structures.
- Childhood trauma: While more research is needed, several studies have shown a link between a person experiencing childhood trauma and developing OCD
Research into the causes of OCD continues to help us learn more about this disorder and can inform treatment practices for more effective care.

OUR PROGRAMS
OCD Treatment at The Berman Center
The Berman Center is a fully outpatient treatment facility providing comprehensive OCD treatment in Atlanta, GA. We incorporate many evidence-based therapies into our care, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy, and complement these practices with outings and activities that help clients develop self-esteem and build interpersonal skills.
We offer two main levels of care:
For those seeking more intensive care, our PHP offers a full schedule of programming and support services, all on an outpatient basis. Our PHP meets five days a week, and each week includes 25 hours of group sessions, one individual counseling session, and a medication management session. The program also features bimonthly family therapy sessions, psychological and medical evaluations, spiritual groups, and other activities. Even when you leave our facility after completing treatment for the day, you can count on our team for support through our 24/7 counselor support initiative.
Our lower level of care is our IOP. This program is a step down from the PHP and features many of the same offerings as our PHP on a reduced schedule of three days a week. This schedule can be helpful for clients who are working or attending school at the same time as treatment and need greater flexibility in their schedules. An IOP still delivers a high level of support that can help clients make significant progress in their recovery.
Have questions about which level of care is right for you? Our team can provide more information about the specifics of each program for OCD. Reach out today to learn more.

OCD and Co-Occurring Disorders
OCD can often co-occur with other mental health disorders or substance use disorders. Some people experience anxiety or depression related to their OCD, and The Berman Center offers treatment for these disorders in addition to our OCD treatment program.
Some individuals with OCD turn to drugs or alcohol to cope with their symptoms, and this can spiral into addiction. When this happens and an individual develops a substance use disorder alongside their OCD, it is referred to as a dual diagnosis.
The Berman Center offers dual diagnosis treatment for individuals who struggle with both a mental health disorder and substance use disorder. Our program features therapies that can help you better understand the connection between the two disorders and how to manage them both. Our dual diagnosis treatment helps clients develop personalized coping strategies to help them sustain their recovery long-term. For clients with OCD, we can help you gain insight into the connection between your obsessions and compulsions and substance abuse, so that you can create healthier ways to cope with stress and anxiety.
