ODD Treatment Center
Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a behavioral condition. It affects individuals and their families, often causing significant disruptions in daily life. Someone with ODD may have frequent anger, defiance and argumentative behavior, especially toward authority figures. These symptoms can lead to challenges at home, school or social settings. ODD can strain relationships and hinder personal development, making early intervention and professional treatment necessary for long-term well-being.
Professional treatment for ODD can help with managing symptoms and the development of healthier coping mechanisms. Without intervention, ODD can get worse over time and lead to serious behavioral issues.
At The Berman Center, we are an outpatient mental health center specializing in providing customized treatment plans designed for individuals with ODD. Our comprehensive therapeutic programs at our ODD treatment center integrate evidence-based approaches with compassion to help overcome ODD’s challenges. By offering a range of treatment routes, we enable clients to actively participate in recovery and ensure they receive the support they need to thrive.

Causes of Oppositional Defiant Disorder
The exact cause of oppositional defiant disorder varies from person to person and is complex. It’s usually the result of a combination of factors that interact to shape behavior.
Understanding the root causes is important for developing a plan at our ODD treatment center to address each individual’s specific needs.
- Biological factors may play a role in ODD, as some people are naturally more prone to impulsivity or emotional reactivity. These traits can make it hard to regulate emotions or their stress response, increasing the likelihood of defiant behavior. Imbalances in neurotransmitters affecting behavior and mood could also contribute to the development of ODD.
- Environmental factors like parenting styles, family dynamics and conflict exposure can influence the onset of ODD. Children raised in environments with high conflict levels, neglect or inconsistent discipline may develop oppositional behaviors as a coping mechanism. Harsh or overly permissive parenting can worsen defiant behavior because kids may struggle with authority or boundaries.
- Psychological factors such as neglect, abuse or past trauma can increase the risk of ODD. Children or teens who have experienced a lot of emotional upheaval may act out as a way to express unresolved pain or frustration. ODD often co-happens with other mental health conditions as well, complicating the disorder.
Understanding the causes of ODD is critical to creating a targeted and effective treatment plan. By addressing the symptoms and underlying factors contributing to the disorder, our team can help individuals with ODD make meaningful progress in their behavior and overall well-being.

Specialized ODD Treatment at The Berman Center
Our evidence-based therapies address the specific challenges of oppositional defiant disorder. Our treatment modalities help understand and manage behaviors while fostering healthier relationships and emotional regulation.
Specific ODD treatments we may offer depending on an individual’s treatment plan include:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy helps clients with ODD recognize their negative thought patterns and change them when they‘re driving defiant behaviors. Clients can learn how to reframe their thinking through CBT.
- Dialectical behavior therapy is focused on regulating emotions and interpersonal skills. For someone with ODD, DBT can help with managing intense emotions and improving relationships with authority figures and peers. This therapy can also teach skills to handle stress and conflict healthily.
- Family therapy is important because family dynamics often play a role in the development or maintenance of ODD behaviors. Family therapy helps to improve communication, rebuild trust and create a more supportive home environment.
- Behavioral therapy can help someone learn positive behaviors and coping strategies to replace defiance and aggression. Through reinforcement techniques and practical exercises, clients can gain tools to handle challenging situations constructively.
- For clients with ODD stemming from past trauma, trauma-focused therapy can help reduce emotional triggers contributing to oppositional behaviors.
At The Berman Center, we offer various levels of care, including an intensive outpatient program. We’re happy to help you learn more about our ODD treatment center and how we can help you or a loved one.
