Understanding Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

After experiencing a traumatic, challenging, or shocking event, a person may develop PTSD, sometimes unknowingly and possibly even months after the event. Those with ongoing issues regarding the event may be assessed by a healthcare provider and then diagnosed with this condition.

Anyone can be at risk for PTSD, and its progression can unfortunately affect activities of daily living. It may even cause a fight-or-flight response during times that are not normally considered threatening or dangerous.

While factors such as extreme stress, lack of emotional support, or family history can contribute to the development of PTSD, it is usually the combination of these factors before, during, and after the traumatic event that increases the risk.

Everyone’s experience of PTSD is unique, and symptoms in response to the trauma can last for months if left untreated. The condition can ultimately affect interactions with others, hindering thinking processes and negatively affecting mood and wellness.

A PTSD treatment center such as the Berman Center can provide a personalized approach to a client’s specific needs. Here at the Berman Center, you will find effective and customizable trauma treatment that fosters connections and prioritizes family therapy as well. We help clients develop healthy coping skills to support their well-being. Our team of healthcare professionals prioritize guiding clients to long-term success.

At our PTSD treatment center, your treatment team will guide you through the healing process with evidence-based therapies and holistic interventions.

KNOW THE SIGNS

Common Signs & Symptoms of PTSD to Look For

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) manifests in unique ways for each individual, reflecting a diverse spectrum of experiences and symptoms. The intensity of these symptoms and any accompanying conditions can vary greatly, sometimes remaining hidden from others.

Some common signs and symptoms of PTSD include:

  • Experiencing vivid flashbacks that may feel as though the traumatic event is happening again, often accompanied by physical responses such as sweating, a racing heart, or difficulty breathing.
  • Engaging in avoidance behaviors, where an individual may steer clear of people, places, or situations that trigger memories of the trauma, leading to withdrawal from social interactions or previously enjoyed activities.
  • Struggling with sleep disturbances, which may present as insomnia, frequent nightmares, or profound fatigue resulting from poor quality sleep.
  • Encountering challenges with concentration and focus, making it hard to complete tasks or follow conversations, often feeling mentally scattered or foggy.
  • Losing interest in activities that were once enjoyable, leading to a sense of apathy or withdrawal from hobbies and social engagements that brought happiness.
  • Experiencing feelings of detachment, emotional numbness, or a sense of disconnection from oneself or one’s surroundings, which can make it difficult to engage fully in life.
  • Living with a persistent feeling of tension, irritability, or being on edge, which can lead to an exaggerated startle response or heightened anxiety.
  • Engaging in reckless or self-destructive behaviors, which might include substance abuse, unsafe driving, or other impulsive actions that pose risks to personal safety.

Understanding these symptoms is crucial for recognizing PTSD and supporting individuals who may be struggling with its effects.
