Women's Treatment

Women’s Treatment Center

The Berman Center offers a gender-specific women’s treatment program for addiction and mental health care in Atlanta.

Women's Treatment Center

Several factors, including gender, influence the path to recovery from addiction and also co-occurring mental disorders. It’s also very personal. Recognizing this, The Berman Center offers a specialized women’s treatment center. These focus on the particular needs and experiences of women facing challenges.

In our gender-specific programs at our women’s treatment center, we provide an understanding, supportive environment. Women experience and express emotional and psychological issues differently from men. They also face unique societal pressures and expectations. In our women’s treatment programs, women can explore and address issues like relationships, femininity and emotional expression in a productive, safe setting. We create a space where women can talk through struggles without fear of stigma or judgment, leading to personalized, effective treatment outcomes.

The Berman Center is an outpatient mental health center and provider of addiction treatment services in Atlanta.

Addiction and Mental Health in Women: Unique Challenges and Treatment Approaches

Women tend to experience and respond to addiction and mental health challenges differently than men. Understanding the differences is important for developing effective approaches to meet women’s needs.

Some of the unique challenges women may face include:

  • Prevalence of co-occurring disorders: Women are more likely than men to experience addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders like eating disorders, anxiety and depression. The conditions often relate to one another, which can worsen the other. This complicates the clinical picture and requires integrated treatment approaches.
  • Influence of hormonal fluctuations: Women’s hormones change throughout their lives, including during menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum and menopause. These shifts can impact mental health and substance use. For example, hormone fluctuations can worsen symptoms of depression and other mood disorders. That can, in turn, make women more vulnerable to turning to substances as a type of coping mechanism.
  • Trauma’s impact: Women are more likely to have experienced trauma. This can include domestic violence and sexual abuse, contributing to addiction and mental health issues. In our women’s treatment center, we’re equipped to provide trauma-informed care.
  • Social and cultural expectations: Pressures and cultural expectations surrounding concepts of caregiving, self-sacrifice and femininity can impact a woman’s mental health and willingness to get help. Women may feel guilt for prioritizing their well-being, or they could delay getting necessary treatment because of a fear of judgment.
  • Substance use patterns: Compared to men, women may use drugs or alcohol for different reasons, such as coping with trauma or emotional pain. Women are more likely to progress to dependence more quickly as well.

The Berman Center is Atlanta’s top provider of outpatient mental health treatment and addiction treatment, with gender-specific programs.

TREATMENT ELEMENTS

The Need for Gender-Specific Treatment Approaches

Some of the areas of focus in our programs geared toward the needs of women include:

Trauma-Informed Care

Because of the high prevalence of trauma among women, gender-specific programs at The Berman Center integrate trauma-informed care. This approach recognizes trauma’s impact on addiction and mental health. There’s an emphasis on safety, empowerment, and therapeutic interventions that help with processing and healing from traumatic experiences.

Hormonal and Reproductive Health

Women’s treatment programs can include support and education related to hormonal changes and reproductive health. By taking a holistic approach, women can learn how to manage symptoms and build healthy coping methods.

Relationships and Interpersonal Issues

Women might prioritize relationships in their lives, and as a result, they can experience addiction and mental health issues differently because of interpersonal dynamics. A women’s treatment program can address relationship and family dynamics and parenting concerns. This helps women improve communication, set boundaries, and build healthy relationships.

Peer Support

A gender-specific environment facilitates connections with other women going through similar experiences. Everyone can feel validated and understood. Peer support is a big part of recovery, providing accountability, encouragement and belonging.

Customized Interventions and Therapies

Women-specific programs can include tailored interventions addressing issues like self-esteem and body image. At The Berman Center, we offer drug addiction treatment and treatment for co-occurring mental disorders in a private, comfortable environment.

Family Therapy

Including family in the treatment process can improve communication and help resolve conflict within the family system. It can also be a way to educate family members about BPD so they have strategies needed to support the recovery of their loved one.

OUR PROGRAMS

Effective Outpatient Programs at Our Women's Treatment Center

The Berman Center offers outpatient programs that are flexible but comprehensive. These support women at different stages of their recovery journey, offering varying levels of care that cater to individual needs but letting them maintain daily responsibilities. Some of the benefits of outpatient programs at our center include:
  • Flexibility: Outpatient programs can accommodate women’s schedules with family, work or educational commitments. The flexibility helps women balance recovery with other responsibilities in their lives.
  • Continued support and structure: These programs offer ongoing therapeutic support and structure to maintain recovery and prevent relapse. Women can access a variety of therapies and resources to address underlying issues contributing to substance or mental health challenges.
  • Real-world application: Outpatient care lets women apply learned skills and strategies to real-life situations. Immediate application reinforces learning, supporting the development of healthy coping strategies and habits.
  • Cost-effective: Unlike residential treatment, outpatient programs can be more cost-effective but offer high-quality care.
Whether you’re seeking a women’s treatment center offering dual diagnosis treatment or treatment for addiction alone, The Berman Center has flexible but effective options available.

Stories of Hope

WE CAN HELP

Levels of Outpatient Care at Our Women's Treatment Center

We offer several levels of outpatient treatment at The Berman Center, including:

Partial Hospitalization Program

Our partial hospitalization program (PHP) is our most intensive level of care, and it can be a step down from residential treatment or a starting point. It’s structured throughout the day and includes multiple therapy hours and daily activities. The program emphasizes skill building and relapse prevention.

PHPs take a holistic approach, including both individual and group therapy, medication management and practices like mindfulness and exercise. During a PHP at The Berman Center, clients can maintain some aspects of their daily lives, helping ease the transition back into responsibilities while receiving substantial support.

Intensive Outpatient Program

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is less intensive than a PHP but still supportive and structured, including several therapy sessions weekly. An IOP lets women at our center attend therapy while managing other responsibilities, with regular group and individual therapy sessions providing continued support and accountability. The program reinforces skills learned in different levels of care and supports ongoing recovery.

Standard Outpatient Treatment

Our most flexible level of care is a standard outpatient program, with fewer hours of therapy each week. The level is well-suited to women who have made significant progress in their recovery and need minimal support in maintaining their sobriety and mental health. A standard outpatient program lets women fully engage in their personal and professional lives with minimal disruption.
