Atlanta Heroin Rehab Center

The opioid epidemic, which includes heroin, has been devastating to individuals and families throughout the country. When someone has an addiction to heroin or other opioids, it can take over their lives, affect their mental and physical health, and destroy relationships and goals they have for their lives.

The Berman Center, a mental health treatment center in Atlanta, offers comprehensive treatment and mental health care. Our Atlanta intensive outpatient addiction treatment programs can help you overcome a heroin addiction and experience the freedom of recovery.

THE SYMPTOMS

The Effects of Heroin

As an opioid, when someone uses heroin, it has powerful effects on their brain and body. Heroin binds to opioid receptor sites throughout the body, especially the central nervous system. When these sites are activated by heroin, it creates a euphoric high and a sense of relaxation. Over time, heroin becomes addictive because of its ability to affect the brain’s reward system and response.

When someone develops an addiction to heroin, unfortunately, it also puts them at risk of overdose. A heroin overdose occurs when the brain and body are overwhelmed by the effects of the drug, which slows down the central nervous system. If your central nervous system slows too much, it impacts breathing, blood pressure, and heart rate, which can be fatal.

In the United States, overdose deaths, primarily related to opioids, are the number one cause of injury-related death.

The opioid epidemic in the U.S. started in the 1990s, primarily with prescribing prescription drugs. Eventually, it became an out-of-control and frequently deadly issue, with tens of thousands of deaths yearly.

Heroin is made from morphine, with short-term effects including:
  • Skin flushing
  • Feelings of heaviness in the arms and legs
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Itchiness
  • Foggy mental function
  • Nodding in and out of consciousness
  • Dry mouth

The long-term effects of heroin may include:

  • Collapsed veins, if the drug is injected
  • Insomnia
  • Infection of the heart lining
  • Constipation and stomach problems
  • Kidney and liver disease
  • Lung complications like pneumonia
  • New or worsening mental health symptoms
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Irregular menstrual cycles

Heroin is incredibly addictive, and people who use it often have a tolerance. With tolerance, you need higher doses of heroin to get the same effects, leading to the development of substance use disorders.

The Berman Center is an Atlanta heroin rehab center that treats the underlying causes of addiction to help you achieve long-term recovery and build a sense of self. Our Atlanta heroin addiction treatment programs are available on an outpatient basis and include an intensive outpatient program, a partial hospitalization program, and programs for adolescents.

What Are the Signs of Heroin Addiction?

The signs of heroin addiction can be categorized as physical, behavioral, and mental.

Physical signs of heroin addiction include:

  • Lethargy
  • Weight loss
  • Insomnia
  • Runny nose
  • Skin problems like scabs or sores
  • Slow breathing
  • Pinpoint pupils
  • Flushed skin

Behavioral symptoms of heroin addiction can include:

  • Withdrawal from other activities, including at school or work
  • Lying or being deceptive about activities
  • Withdrawing from friends, family, and loved ones
  • Having paraphernalia such as needles or syringes
  • Wanting to stop using heroin but being unable to

Mental symptoms of an addiction to heroin or other opioids include:

  • Mood swings or changes
  • Confusion
  • Problems with judgment or thinking clearly
  • Defensiveness
  • Anxiety
  • Wanting to isolate or be alone most of the time

Over time, along with a psychological addiction, physical dependence on heroin forms in most people. When you’re dependent on heroin, if you stop using it suddenly, you’ll likely experience withdrawal symptoms. Heroin withdrawal symptoms can include an inability to experience pleasure, intense cravings, nausea and vomiting, anxiety, and flu-like symptoms.

Some medications can help ease heroin withdrawal symptoms and cravings.

The Berman Center works with clients to help them successfully recover from heroin addiction. Our Atlanta heroin rehab center includes comprehensive programs available on an outpatient basis. We work to help you find a renewed sense of hope and purpose in your life.

EFFECTS

The Science of Addiction

Addiction is a chronic disease with the primary symptoms of compulsive drug seeking and use, despite negative consequences. Addiction leads to changes in the brain circuits playing a role in stress, self-control, and reward. Addiction has similarities to other chronic diseases in that it disrupts the brain’s healthy function and worsens over time without treatment.

There are biological factors that can raise the risk of addiction to heroin and other substances, as well as environmental factors.

When someone has an addiction to drugs or alcohol, they may have co-occurring mental health disorders. Around half of people with a substance use disorder are thought to have another mental health disorder, such as depression or anxiety. These conditions must be treated as well for the best recovery outcomes.

The Berman Center is an Atlanta heroin rehab center offering treatment programs for adults and adolescents based on research and their individual, holistic needs. Our Atlanta heroin addiction treatment programs are offered on an outpatient basis, so you can maintain other responsibilities while receiving life-saving treatment.

Treatment For Heroin Addiction

Addiction can be successfully managed, and recovery is possible. The key to treatment for heroin addiction is behavioral therapy.

Behavioral therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, can help someone struggling with addiction to change behaviors and attitudes related to substance use. During treatment, someone with a heroin addiction can learn how to manage triggers and stressful situations that would otherwise lead to relapse.

During an intensive outpatient program for heroin addiction at The Berman Center, you participate in three days of treatment a week. This includes focusing on group therapy and having weekly individual talk therapy sessions and family therapy sessions each month.

Programs also include recovery coaching, 12-step yoga, and relapse prevention.

During a partial hospitalization program at our Atlanta heroin rehab center, you work with a treatment team of psychotherapists, counselors, medical doctors, and spiritual leaders. The PHP at The Berman Center prepares you to move into a less intensive treatment phase in an intensive outpatient program. A PHP at The Berman Center is five days a week, with daily group sessions and weekly individual sessions. Medication management and medical evaluation are included, as well as psychological evaluations and life skills training.
